Wig care and lifespan: what to tell your customers

When a customer asks how long a wig will last, the honest answer is that it depends on three things: the hair, the construction, and how it is worn and cared for. This is the plain version to pass on, without overpromising - the guidance that keeps a customer coming back for the second piece.

What decides lifespan

Three things, in order. The hair: a finer strand that takes colour with less processing tends to hold its colour longer. The construction: a cap that does not read as constructed usually carries less stress at the hairline. And the wearing: a piece worn daily simply ages faster than one worn for occasions.

Everyday care that matters most

Less is the theme. Brush from the ends upward before and after wearing, use a wide-tooth comb on wet hair, and avoid pulling at the front hairline. Most damage to a wig happens at the hairline and the nape, which is exactly where handling is heaviest.

Washing and heat

Wash less often than you would wash your own hair, with a gentle shampoo and cool water, and let the piece dry on a stand rather than on a radiator. With heat, keep the temperature low and never hold an iron on the same spot; hair can be scorched, and scorched hair cannot be restored.

Storage between wears

Store on a stand or in a soft bag, out of direct sunlight, and keep the shape of the style rather than folding it flat. A piece that is stored correctly holds its curl and its parting longer, which is what customers notice first.

What to say when a customer asks

Give a range and the conditions rather than a promise: with care, a human hair piece lasts well, and the two things that shorten its life most are daily heat styling and heavy handling at the hairline. Then show the customer how to handle the piece. Advice that keeps the wig alive is what earns the repeat order.

Questions we are asked

How long does a human hair wig last?

It depends on the hair, the construction and the wear. The honest answer is a range, not a number, and it moves on how often the piece is worn and how much heat it takes.

Does finer European hair last less well?

Finer hair takes colour with less processing, which tends to hold a shade longer, but it still benefits from gentle handling. The main risks are heat and pulling at the hairline.

Should customers wash wigs often?

Less often than their own hair. A gentle shampoo, cool water and drying on a stand is the routine that protects both the hair and the cap.
